We've long provided the ability to auto-calculate BMI from readings submitted by patients via questionnaire, or when weight is recorded in a consultation, and an adult height has been recorded previously.
Over the years we've developed this to follow up raised BMIs when patients have submitted their weight via questionnaire. This can be a soft message to advise losing some weight for mildly elevated BMIs, or more significant offers of support including NHS Digital Weight Management (if eligible) and local weight management services.
The system won't send these questionnaires if patients should be accessing the Diabetes Prevention Programme, or if they meet the criteria for OB005. The system also checks for any indications that messages may not be appropriate for the patient, e.g. those with a recent cancer diagnosis or 2WW referral, palliative patients, patients with a history of eating disorder, those who are currently pregnant or those who've declined their annual review.
These are the automation options available:
- Automate calculating BMI
- Automate sending messages about BMI when it has been submitted via questionnaire. This includes:
- Message to say BMI is within the healthy range (can be disabled to save on messages if necessary)
- Message to say BMI is raised and advising weight loss (can be disabled)
- Message with questionnaire to offer weight loss services
You can check your practice setup by looking in the Pathology Localisations folder and reviewing the weight section. For example, this shows a practice with automated calculation of BMI and sending of messages enabled:
