Getting Started with Prescribing - Managing Repeat Prescribing

Modified on Mon, 3 Mar at 5:23 PM

The heart of the prescribing module is the process for managing repeat prescribing, safely and efficiently.

To do this effectively, there are different elements of our systems that need to be in place:

1) Med Review Questionnaires need to be sent regularly

How do I send out Med Review Questionnaires and Invitations?

The sending of these can be automated (i.e. sent in the background whenever someone is in the record) but you may want to review your numbers before you turn that on!

2) Completed med review questionnaires need to be reviewed by clinicians

How do I record medication reviews?

If prescribers reviewing completed questionnaires prefer to work from appointment ledgers or tasks, admin staff can bulk task or add to rotas from these reports:

Adding coding Xa48e AND X74Wh will remove patients from these reports for 4w.

Patients who need appointments will drop into reports for med review invites, which are sent from reports.

3) Overdue repeats

Our protocol should be used whenever a patient has gone past their review date or run out of issues - Prescribing Instructions: Overdue Repeats Pathway

This protocol authorises staff to issue additional medication and move them along the prescribing pathway. However, for this to be used, questionnaires need to be sent out and reviewed regularly.

4) Checks when issuing high risk drugs need to be enabled

Prescribing instructions - Checks when issuing High Risk Drugs

This should not be turned on until invites for monitoring are being regularly sent from the recall system. You don't want to be reducing patients' access to medication when they've not even been invited to attend for monitoring
