Why does this patient need these tests?

Modified on Tue, 11 Mar at 5:20 PM

This is a common query, especially when the patient has had those tests recently.

As much as possible, the Recall Overview will display the reasons for a patient needing monitoring (this may be only visible on the "Manage Recall" tab):

For each of these alerts, you can expand them for more information by clicking on the drop down arrow next to them:

There are several occasions where tests may be showing as due despite having been done recently:

  • The "Request One-Off Tests" template has been used after recent bloods, e.g. to repeat them
  • The "Request One-Off Tests" template has been used with future dated tests, but the tests have actually been taken shortly before the date they were due. In that scenario, the system will still show them as outstanding, partly so the template can be used for repeat tests. This scenario should be avoided by setting repeat dates a few weeks before they're due. If they are no longer needed, they can be cancelled using the "Cancel One-Off Requests" button on the manage recall page:
  • Tests need repeating following recent results, e.g. if a patient isn't diabetic and has a HbA1c >=48, the system will show it as due again immediately after the result as it needs repeating to confirm or exclude a diabetic diagnosis.
  • Tests are needed due to medication initiation or changes, for example a change in statin should be followed up with ALTs & Lipids approximately 12 weeks after the change. When a statin is changed, a pop up will ask whether monitoring is required, and if "YES" is selected, the system will invite the patient about 8 weeks later. However, if the patient has attended for bloods too soon, they will still show as outstanding. This is because tests repeated too soon after a medication change are not valid indicators of the impact of the medication.
